Imagine walking along a cool coastal path after sunset. The scrub is whispering in the wind. Somewhere nearby, an insect clicks, a seabird calls, and then—rustle—something stout and scaly noses out of a burrow.

Not a lizard—and proud of it
Why does a tuatara look so much like a lizard if it is not one? Nature enjoys a good look-alike. Tuatara and lizards are both reptiles, but the tuatara belongs to its own surviving branch of the reptile family tree. It is the last living representative of its family, Sphenodontidae.

The secret spot on a baby’s head

How to be a tuatara ally
You do not need to travel to an offshore island to care about tuatara. Start with curiosity. Learn the names of animals that live near you. Ask why native habitats matter. Then think of wildlife as neighbours, not decorations. Neighbours need safe places to sleep, find food, and raise young.
